The Merchant Navy offers one of the most exciting and rewarding careers for those who dream of traveling the world while working in a highly professional maritime environment. Among all the ranks at sea, the Captain (Master of the vessel) holds the highest level of responsibility and authority on board.

The journey to becoming a Captain in the Merchant Navy begins with strong academic preparation and industry-oriented training. With experienced faculty and a proven training approach, Radiant Study Centre helps numerous aspiring students prepare for the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test and navigate DNS sponsorship selection processes conducted by leading international shipping companies.

From Aspiration to a Career in the Merchant Navy

The sight of massive cargo vessels traveling across the ocean often motivates young students in Kerala to explore careers in the Merchant Navy.  India is a major contributor to the global shipping industry, contributing nearly 9% of the world’s seafarers.

Achieving a rank from Deck Officer to a captain requires years of training, sea experience, and continuous professional development. The journey typically starts with qualifying for the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test, conducted by the Indian Maritime University, which opens the door to maritime courses in India.

Every ship captain once began their career as a cadet who was ready to learn and grow in the maritime industry. With strong IMU CET preparation and professional training, aspiring seafarers can begin their maritime journey and work their way up to senior positions in the global shipping industry.

Step One — Cracking the IMU CET, Where It All Starts

The IMU CET is the primary gateway for students who wish to pursue professional maritime courses such as  B.Sc. Nautical Science and Marine Engineering. Held annually by the Indian Maritime University, the exam evaluates students’ proficiency in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, English, and General Aptitude.

With seasoned faculty and focused preparation, the Radiant Study Centre  helps students confidently prepare for the IMU CET exam and

Secure DNS sponsorship opportunities with reputed global shipping companies.

Step 2 — DNS Sponsorship from Global Shipping Companies

The DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) program, approved by the Indian Maritime University, is a well-known pathway for students who want to become deck officers. The program includes one year of classroom training followed by practical sea training with a shipping company.

For many aspiring seafarers, shipping companies often recruit students first and then provide them with the required ongoing training and sea service.

Students who secure DNS sponsorship gain several advantages, including:

  • Assured onboard sea training (sea berth)
  • A clear career progression in the Merchant Navy
  • Hands-on experience with international shipping operations

At Radiant Study Centre, the best IMU CET  coaching centre helps many aspiring students receive step-by-step guidance throughout the DNS sponsorship process, including preparation for company entrance tests, interviews, and selection procedures conducted by leading global shipping companies.

Step 3: First Professional Role — Deck Cadet

After completing the DNS program, students join a vessel as Deck Cadets, marking the start of their professional life at sea.

During this period, they develop skills in:

  • Navigation watchkeeping assistance
  • Cargo handling operations
  • Ship safety systems and emergency procedures
  • Maintenance routines and ship records

To progress to the next stage of their career, cadets are required to complete around 18 months of onboard sea service, which prepares them for the Certificate of Competency (CoC).

Step 4: Become a third officer

After completing the required sea service and clearing the Certificate of Competency (CoC) examination under the Directorate General of Shipping, a cadet advances to the rank of Third Officer.

A Third Officer is a junior deck officer on a ship who assists senior officers with navigation, safety, and communication duties.

Key Responsibilities of a Third Officer
  • Standing independent navigational watches on the bridge

  • Maintaining life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment

  • Handling GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) communications

  • Assisting in safety drills and ship operations

Step 5: Promotion to Second Officer

With additional sea service and successful completion of competency examinations,  an officer is promoted to Second Officer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing voyage and passage plans
  • Maintaining and correcting nautical charts
  • Managing navigational instruments on the bridge
    Ensuring safe navigation practices

This role ensures the ship follows a safe and well-planned route.

Step 6: As a Chief Officer:

The Chief Officer is the second-in-command of the vessel, responsible for supervising daily deck operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing cargo handling and storage procedures
  • Supervising crew activities and safety protocols
  • Maintaining vessel stability during voyages
  • Planning maintenance and operational schedules

This rank plays a vital role in preparing officers for the Captain’s position.

Step 7: Becoming the Captain (Master of the Vessel)

With extensive sea experience and completion of advanced competency certifications, a maritime officer eventually reaches the rank of Captain.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the safety of the ship and its crew
  • Directing navigation and voyage operations
  • Ensuring compliance with international shipping laws
  • Overseeing cargo handling and ship performance

As the commanding officer, the Captain leads the ship and makes critical decisions throughout the journey.

The Rewards — Why Choose the Merchant Navy?

The Merchant Navy offers a rewarding career with global travel and competitive salaries paid in US dollars, along with potential tax benefits for many Indian seafarers.

Average monthly salaries include:

  • Third Officer: USD 2,500 – 4,000

  • Second Officer: USD 4,000 – 6,500

  • Chief Officer: USD 6,000 – 10,000

  • Captain / Master Mariner: USD 12,000 – 18,000
